ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER
Bedford County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for an anticipated opening in the Animal Control Division. The Animal Control Officer acts as a representative of the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office and performs responsible protective work in a variety of general or support duty police assignments; primarily animal related calls for service. The Animal Control Officer enforces all State laws and local ordinances associated with the control and protection of domestic animals, including livestock.
Prior knowledge in a law enforcement field or animal control experience is preferred, but not required. The preferred applicant should have familiarity and/or experience in the handling of dogs/cats/livestock; the ability to communicate with the public in a calm and assertive manner; be a self-starter and be able to work independently; must possess sufficient strength and mobility to capture or restrain large animals and place animals in and remove animals from cages; maintain appropriate competency certifications for euthanasia to include euthanizing and disposing of animals as provided by statute, regulations and department policy; be proficient in the use of computer systems, firearms, and all department paperwork dealing with this position; and possess the willingness and ability, if required, to become law enforcement certified through attendance and graduation from a law enforcement academy.
Other Qualifications:
- Must be a U.S. citizen or have applied for citizenship
- Must be a high school graduate or possess a General Education Degree Certificate (G.E.D) or equivalent
- No Felony criminal convictions
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License
Availability to work Monday – Friday with required on-call nightly and weekend rotation schedule.
