At 8:05 a.m. February 2, 2017, the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. The dispatcher advised they had received a call from a man who said he was behind a truck that had been stolen from Old Station Loop, Hardy, in Bedford County. The caller stated that he worked for the company in Rocky Mount that owned the truck and the white male driving it did not work for the company. As he continued to follow the stolen truck, Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies and Virginia State Police troopers were made aware of the situation. The stolen truck was found abandoned in the Wirtz area of Franklin County by law enforcement officers
Around 10:30 a.m., Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies located Roger S. Smith, of Salem, walking on 122 near Burnt Chimney. He was arrested and detained. A Bedford County Sheriff’s deputy responded and took Smith into custody for larceny of the truck. He was then transported to the Bedford Adult Detention Center.
